Salem’s Lot is Stephen King’s second published novel, written in 1975. Much like most of King’s novels, Salem’s Lot is a horror book. King was inspired by Dracula to compose a novel about vampires. The protagonist is surrounded by these, which targets the frightening element of being surrounded by monsters. King’s novel won several awards, such as a Locus Award for All-Time Greatest Fantasy. Ben Mears, the protagonist, spent four decades as a kid in a little town called Jerusalem’s Lot in Maine, called Salem’s Lot for brief. Ben is a writer and decides to go back to this little city in Maine. Ben befriends a regional high school teacher called Matt Burke. In addition, he begins a romantic dalliance with a young college graduate called Susan Norton.
Ben is in town since he is writing a book about Marsten House, a nearby abandoned house where Ben had a scary experience as a child. Marsten House was a depression-era structure, built for a hitman. Kurt asserts he’s purchasing the home to start an antique shop. Nobody has ever noticed Kurt, just his bald small business partner, Richard Straker.
In fact, Kurt is a vampire and the primary victim is a small boy named Ralphie Glick. His brother, Danny, is also taken, but turned into a vampire instead of killed. Many locals become victim to getting vampires, including Danny’s mom. Each person who’s bitten becomes really sick before dying, losing color and their desire. They don’t remember their meeting with a vampire, or believe it was a fantasy. These infected men and women go missing, or so their bodies disappear from the morgue, thus there’s not any concrete proof of what is occuring.
Soon, Ben realizes what is happening. He enlists the support of some other people in the town: his friend Matt and Matt’s doctor, Jimmy Cody, along with Susan. Ben also looks to the local priest, Father Callahan, and a young boy named Mark Petrie, who likes horror books. But others are not as lucky. Matt’s interaction with a vampire at his home causes him to have a heart attack and lands him at the hospital. Susan’s ex-boyfriend Floyd, made to a half-vampire by Kurt, attacks Ben, putting him to the hospital too.
Susan decides to face Kurt herself, running into Mark on the road. They are both captured by Kurt. Mark manages to escape by creating Straker bleed out of his mind, so deflecting Kurt and dooming Straker. Susan is not quite as lucky and can be made a vampire by Kurt. Ben is ruined by this event.
They decide to visit Marston House during the day, since the Turks only come out at night. Ben, Mark, Jimmy, and Father Callahan visit Marston House. They locate Susan, and Ben, realizing what he must do, stakes her. They try to seal off the house using the host. The group hurries to his parents to frighten them.
His parents are not fast to act or comprehend and suddenly, the power goes away. Kurt has found them kills Mark’s parents facing him, but doesn’t infect them. Kurt tries to take Mark, but Father Callahan wards him off with a cross. Mark leaks, but Kurt challenges Father Callahan, telling him to throw the cross away. Father Callahan loses faith and Kurt compels him to drink his blood. Afterwards, Callahan is unable to walk into his church, getting a shock upon his attempt. Jimmy dies a dreadful death, as he had been enticed by vampires to Ben’s former boarding house. The vampires produce trick stairs, in which there are lots of knives beneath, and Jimmy is impaled. Mark and Ben would be the only ones left. Mark and Ben figure out the witches are currently staying at the new boarding house. They opt to move there in the daytime and make their final attack.

They had hoped staking Kurt would have gotten rid of those other Turks, but they were incorrect. The pair find newspaper articles that show otherwise.
A year later, Mark and Ben realize they need to travel back to Maine and finally rid the city completely of vampires. The novel ends with Ben starting a fire with a lit cigarette in drought-browned bud of Salem’s Lot, presumably to smoke the witches out to bet them to set fire to the entire city, leaving just ashes.
